He is really old and weary and seems like a completely not guilty character. But, in this tale, he is the cause of three expirys. He is the very embodiment of final stage itself. The first clue to the old mans identity occurs when he provided the rioters with the directions to acquire Death. Well sirs, he said, if it be your design To find knocked out(p) death, turn up this crooked wayTowards that grove, I left him thither right away Under a tree, and there youll find him waiting 182-185 In this cite the old man knows he is telling the rioters where the gold is. He knows it give turn the rioters against themselves. erstwhile they saw he gold they started plotting to blot out to each one other to take the gold for themselves. But, it also shows that he wants to die. In line 152 he says Mother, clean to me soon -152, meaning that he wants to be die and be bury in the earth. Calling the earth his mother.
